I recently spent three unforgettable weeks in Southeast Asia -- two weeks in the Philippines, on the central island of Visayas, and the third week in Thailand. I brought both my digital and film cameras, eager to document the landscapes and lifestyle of countries so new to me.
I ended up spending more time carrying my film camera with me. It fit into my bag easily and I felt as though it could handle more moisture and sun exposure, which was crucial given both the climate and the nature of our daily activities. We spent days island hopping in the sun, exploring busy street markets, visiting elephant sanctuaries… and my Pentax was incredible. It withstood the elements and did a wonderful job capturing the most meaningful moments from my trip.
When I got back into town, I couldn't wait to get my film developed -- I shot three rolls, two in the Philippines and one in Thailand. When I got my scans yesterday, I was so excited to see what they held, and so happy to relive every moment.
I absolutely love shooting film when I’m traveling. There’s a little bit of risk because you never really know exactly what you’re getting -- how the lighting and composition will translate, how the colors will appear and fall together… but that makes the reward that much better. It also makes my practice of taking photos so much more intentional when I know I only have a few frames left. I took it with me everywhere! It was always on my hip and really did see a lot.
Here are some of my favorites from my three weeks in Southeast Asia. I hope you love them as much as I do.
